I learned American Sign Language over 20 years ago. Since then, I've forgotten a lot of signs, because I wasn't practicing often. When I saw this video was available, I jumped at the chance to work with it. I was happy with the price, but the video is horrible! The screen is too small and there's no way to increase the size. And the chapters don't seem long enough. Just as you get a handle on the lessons, they're over.
I would advise looking for other disks. I definitely got what I paid for, which wasn't a whole lot. I would also advise selecting disks from people who actually work in the deaf community. Definitely PASS up this disk. |

| Others have done a good job detailing how little one gets with this CD. She certainly talks more than signs. I'd like to add that it's technically inferior as well. Even though it's a small screen and cannot be maximized, it's still very poor resolution. You would think that a sign language program would be full-screen for good visibility, but she signs so little anyway that it probably doesn't matter. There's very little control over the video playback, so you can't really go back just a little to repeat anything you missed. You either start again at the beginning of the "chapter" or forget it. Since she talks too much at the beginning of the chapters, it was too annoying to repeat them. Even at half price, it isn't worth it. You can learn more on any given website for ASL. |

| I was gonna say don't waste your money on this, but I would go even a step further don't waste your time! I will say one good thing about this software and it's a gift all things considered they tried hard. Which maybe the biggest over statement ever, firstly the Software says American Sign Language (normally meaning ASL). This software teaches ESL for those who know anything about deaf culture this in and of itself is an insult. Although ESL and ASL have some of the same sign ESL is simply signs that hearing people wanted the deaf to use, because it's closer to what they thought was right. Secondly although the first should be a deal breaker already, they use outdated technology both in production and in teaching. I liked the software is pretty new and it talks about an older TTY what about the video rely service which strangely isn't covered. Thirdly the speaker acts like she understands and has been around deaf people a lot, than why can't she form a correct sentence and sometimes even the sign correctly. Lastly need I say more the software is short and many of the last lessons don't even teach signs really she aids a deaf person or visits a deaf person and the angle is bad so you can't see her signs well. There's not explanation except what she is signing, which you can hardly see anyway due to the bad angle. Sorry this software just isn't very good nor does it teach the language correctly so honestly why use it or even make it! |

| If you want to learn sign language go to youtube, it's free! There are short lessons that are easier to follow, and the video is clear. With this program, the screen is very small and cannot be enlarged, the video is closed captioned so you cannot see the signs because of the text, also the video is not clear. |

I had modest expectations for QuickStart ASL. It was, after all, less than $10. Sadly, this may have been too much even at that price.
For anyone contemplating the purchase of this CD, be aware that I was disappointed by three things: the size and quality of the video, the fact that the video cannot be enlarged and that half the screen is taken up with a text transcript of the signer's words - which are already captioned within the video.
I was thinking of this as a stop-gap until I could afford a DVD. Too bad I didn't wait and put the money toward something else. |
