Nice upgrade for an old PC2010-09-054 / 5
I purchased this PCI card to provide USB 2.0 connections for an 8 1/2 year old Dell Dimension 4300S PC. It installed easily. The Drivers were already present on my Dimension so I didn't have to use the minidisk that came with the card, but it did take a few minutes for my old old computer to find and install the drivers. Seems to provide rapid trnsfer of data from the hard drive to external disk drives that are connected through this PCI card. The one drawback is that the new (?) drivers supplied with the card are on a minidisk that my old CD-ROM drive can not accomodate. It would be better to have these on a full-sized CD since many purchasers likely have older model PC's that can not accomodate the new smaller disks. I was fortunate that my computer came with drivers that will accomoadte this card.

I bought this PCI usb 2.0 card in order to give my older computer the ability to run modern usb 2.0 devices instead of the 1.1 it had onboard. I like to be cheap, but buying this cheap hardware was a mistake.

It installed easily, and the drivers installed right away. I thought all would be good, but it was not. The first thing I noticed was the connections were loose and did not hold a device well. There is a lot of wiggle room, which makes me wonder how well the data is being read.

I wanted to use the new ports firstly on my usb hard drive, but after I plug it in the first time and take it out, it will not read the drive again until I do a check on it through another computer. I've never had a problem like this before. Now I just plug in the hard drive to the usb 1.1 port in order to save the heartache.

I also wanted to use the new 2.0 ports for a usb wireless adapter I bought. It also plugged in and worked fine, but then I noticed it kept cutting in and out of reception from my wireless router. It also sat in there so loose that i was afraid of it coming out every time I moved the computer. After losing reception several times in an hour, I just decided to plug that also into the onboard 1.1 usb port, which is working great. No thanks to this USB adapter.

The only reason I am keeping this card is because it technically works, and the computer I have it in is not my main computer, so I don't use it for much. I would not buy this again.
You get what you pay for2010-07-033 / 5
Despite what the product being called a five port usb card it is a four port card. You cannot use the all four external ports and the internal port at the same time! Most people probably do not need the internal port, but if your like me and did your out of luck with this card. Other than that it is a fine card and installed without problem. Assuming you don't try to use all five ports this card should be fine.
First one a dud, second one's the charm.2010-07-014 / 5
The first one of these I received from gave me a headache. Windows picked it up, but if I plugged anything into it, it froze the whole computer. I spent 2 days trying to update drivers, etc to get it to work. 3 root hubs and 2 host controllers were showing up in device manager, where it said everything was working properly. But it really wasn't. In the end, I decided on a return. The second one arrived, I popped it in, and it works a treat with no further involvement from me. So my advice is, if you get this and it does not boot the first time working pefectly-- it's probably a dud. Don't waste your time, just do an exchange. rocks-- shipping out replacements right away. I noted that in device manager with the one working properly, I see 4 Universal Host Controllers, and 4 USB Root Hubs added. If you don't see that, then just assume there is a short somewhere and don't waste your time with drivers, etc.
Issues getting it to play nice with older PCs2010-06-244 / 5
I bought this for an older Gateway system running Win98SE with three on-board USB 1.1 ports to add USB 2.0 for faster access to a 500gb external HD and flash drives. The computer only had one PCI slot unused, so I started by just using that one. Unfortunately, the BIOS does not allow you to configure what IRQs are used for each device, and this card uses three IRQs. (one each for the two Universal Host Controllers and one for the Enhanced Host Controller) The BIOS assigned three based on which slot it was placed in and Windows proceeded to boot up. Unfortunately, one of the three was being shared with the AGP video card, (and another was shared with a HD controller card) and during boot Win98 locked.

I proceeded to pull PCI cards and played musical peripherals for about an hour before I found a card slot combination that would not share IRQs with either the video card or the HD controller card. (it ended up sharing IRQs with the SB Live! card, the USB 1.1 ports which the BIOS won't let me disable, and the Ethernet card) Once I found the best combo, Win98 recognized the card and let me install drivers. Unfortunately, the disk contains a large number of drivers, not just those for this card and it took me a while before I found the correct ones. Once all that was done, the card worked flawlessly and recognized the 4-port 3.5" bay hub that was connected to the internal USB slot.

In summary, the card works as advertised, but people with older PCs should be aware of the issues and limitations of this card. Shipping was fast and the price was unbeatable.
