Perfect way to upgrade to USB 2.02010-07-165 / 5
I used this with the Syba SD-VIA-5U 5-port (4+1) USB 2.0 PCI Card, VIA Chip and upgraded an older desktop to USB 2.0 in minutes.
Works like a charm and fits snugly2010-04-294 / 5
10 minutes and I have it working perfectly. The provided USB cable is long enough to go through the inside of my machine, out the an open PCI slot, and into a back USB port. Drivers installed in less than a minute, and it's now working with 3 things plugged into it (webcam, portable hard drive, and wireless mouse). It did take a second to recognize the hard drive, and I had to unplug it and plug it back in, but I had plugged it in just as I started up my computer so the drivers probably weren't finished installing.

I have it in an open floppy slot (I finally decided to get rid of the stupid floppy that I've kept, thinking I might eventually use it, especially since I now have to use its power connector for this) and it fits nicely.

I was unclear when I ordered this so just so everyone is clear, it comes with:
The USB hub
One 4ft USB cord
One DC power to USB A cord
Instruction "sheet"

The product was very loosely wrapped so it will be a cinch to return it if I have any problems.

WARNING: DO NOT connect both power sources. This is what I did, resulting in the unit popping, blowing a puff of smoke, and ceasing to work. Luckily arranged a free replacement. It does not warn against this in the instructions, but it instructs a certain power source with a certain use of the product. I give the product 4/5 because it should definitely warn against this.
Not High Speed, but 2.0, cheesy attachment2010-03-021 / 5
Logo shows HIGH SPEED. It is NOT high speed.

I added this to a Dell D9150, which had a non-oem 5 port back hub that allowed for internal hookup of the USB cable. The non-oem hub is a high-speed 2.0 card, and has always worked well.

I wanted access to USB ports (more than the 2 on the front panel) for connecting digital cameras, HD handycams, iPhone and high-speed USB disks (16GB Kingston HDSD).

I added the drive to an empty bay under the 13-in-1 Micro Card reader. Simple install, using a floppy power cable.

This device has yet to run at High-Speed 2.0. Every device I have connected to it enacts a windows message "This device can run at a higher speed if you connect it to a High-Speed 2.0 port..."

Whether it's pluged into the main OEM ports on the front bezel, the back of the 2.0 card or it's internal port, the same message appears.

Upon opening the device, the infrastructure and chipset are noted as 2.0 only, no high speed certification logo on board.

1 star...you get what you pay for. I don't recommend this panel for anyone needing high speed support of devices.

[Updated info]

The card operates, as a pass fail system. and my review states I opened the device and investigated the circuitry...After researching the chipset, the onboard chip set shows it's architecture is not hi-speed upsteam. If others are having success with this product as a high speed port device in both downstream and upstream modes, then they have a different chipset, and as a purchaser I was not given the opportunity to select the chip set that was shipped to me.

Due to the cost of the item and it's private seller status, it's not economical to return the device.

Also, nowhere in the product description is the product mentioned to be "Bi-Directional High-Speed", only in the picture is there a 2.0 compliant high speed logo.

Upon investigation of the manufacturers main website, the device is listed as high-speed device that support "downstream" on all four ports. It is not a high-speed upsteam device. The unit I have was tested to be infact downstream high speed, but is not high speed upstream, which for the use of read/write external drives (other than small flash drives), devices that require two way high speed communication, or an iPhone, this device is not acceptable.

From Wikipedia:
"It is an important consideration that in common language (and often product marketing) USB 2.0 is used as synonymous with high-speed. However, because the USB 2.0 specification, which introduced high-speed, incorporates and supersedes the USB 1.1 specification, any compliant full-speed or low-speed device is still a USB 2.0 device. Thus, not all USB 2.0 hubs operate at high-speed."

Search "USB hub" on wikipedia for an explaination of how these devices work if you are curious.

I would encourage anyone who needs full USB 2.0 High Speed compliance for UPSTREAM (iPhone, HD Camcorder, External Hard Drives) choose another option or use a bus card with USB 2.0 HS compatability.
Great Way To Bring USB To The Front Panel...2010-02-245 / 5
Great Way To Bring USB To The Front Panel...

I purchased the Syba SD-U2HUB-4 4-Port USB Hub along with a Syba SD-VIA-5U 5-port USB PCI Card to bring 8 new USB 2.0 ports to an elderly Compaq 5838 that came with 4 1.1 USB ports. The 5838 wouldn't boot with that card installed, and it wasn't as physically accommodating for the hub as I had thought it would be. The card worked well in an old fossil kit PC, and the fossil PC accommodated mounting the hub well. Both now reside happily in the fossil PC.

I had previously read the reviews about the electrical hook-up, and already had the power splitter Y cable ready for the installation. The hub mounts in a 3 1/2" diskette drive space just like a diskette drive. The cable supplied is perfect for the internal USB port of a USB expansion card that supplies an internal USB port. That's the way it was hooked up in the fossil for about a week, until the internal port on the card failed (???). Fortunately, the cable is generous enough to allow it to be run outside the case to one of the external ports of the card.

In use, the 4 ports are arranged vertically with very generous spacing between each port. This is great for some of the wide USB dongles like photo card and USB wireless adapters. I use the ports mostly for USB flash drives, and some of them are fairly wide.

I'm quite happy with the hub, and I'm looking at some of the other old relics around here to see if another one (or two) might be in order. I'm less happy with the SYBA 5 port (now 4 port) USB PCI card, and wouldn't choose it to pair the hub up with.
Happy with it so far2010-02-075 / 5
Installation was pretty easy. Because I don't have a 3.5 inch bay free I had to buy a 5.25 to 3.5 inch adapter, but I was able to find a nice adapter bracket kit that included a power adapter that I needed from Cables Unlimited. I was able to easily screw it into my adapter bracket with the included screws. The unit came with a little cable to power it from a USB port if I didn't have a free floppy drive power connector, but then it would have taken up an additional port to power the unit. It would have been nice to have included an adapter to be able to connect it to a hard drive power connector. Until my USB 2.0 controller card arrives I'm only able to test it with USB 1.1, but it works well with 4 devices connected. I tested it in both Windows and Linux and it worked in both. I like that it has a green LED above each port that lights when a device is connected, and the LEDs aren't excessively bright. I liked this enough to order a second one for another computer. The only thing negative about it is that I would have preferred one meant to fit a 5.25 inch bay, because none of the computers I own have a free 3.5 inch bay. It also would have been nice to include an adapter to be able to plug it into a USB header on the motherboard. It's a good price, too. I've seen others for around thirty dollars.
