Corel have wrecked this program. I've been working with WordPerfect wordprocessor for many years. But over the last 2 upgrades that aspect of the Office Suite gets worse. It's full of bugs. One, you often can't see lines the like this one _______________
Just a lazy bunch of people, can't be bothered to fix things. It is however, a trend to release bug-riddeen programs & let the customer spot the faults & let the company know. If this program doesn't improve it'll be finished. OK, so it's cheaper than Microsoft, but one wants it to work A-OK. Put up the price, but Corel needs to produce a better product. As it stands forget it.

For me, the best thing about this upgrade is the ability to download a PDF form, change it, and save a copy of the changed form like it was any other document. This feature, alone, was worth the cost of the upgrade. Maybe its just the fact that I've been using WP since before Windows was invented, but I still find it much easier to work with than any version of Word. I especially like the fact that, when a document isn't looking like you want it to look, you can "open the hood" with "reveal codes" and see what is causing the problem.

Wordperfect -- still the king of word processors

I've been using WordPerfect since version 6.1, and MS Word since about 1993. WordPerfect continues to be compatible with prior versions since 6.1 and still offers multiple filters for importing & conversion from other file formats. You can pick & choose which file formats you'll likely need to convert at installation, but of course add in (or remove) more filters later.

You can still extensively customize most of the interface. The menu bar is slightly different than my prior version (12) but pretty intuitively obvious and you can still choose what to include on the menu bars. I appreciated being able to use the version 8 keyboard commands if I want. Basically I was able to start productive work right out of the box rather than trying to get used to idiosyncracies of a new interface.

You can still turn off the splashscreen for faster loading, customize macro & file locations etc.

My old files, envelope macros and custom label definitions worked perfectly, no modifications needed.

The conversions to pdf again work perfectly and conversion into WordPerfect from Acrobat is very acceptable. I converted some medical journal articles and it properly set up columns, fonts & did quite well at formatting. If you wanted to edit an Acrobat document for republication some reformatting would be needed. On the other hand, WordPerfect shines at formatting and it's so easy to get rid of garbage by looking at the actual format commands. There's a way of looking at hidden formatting commands in MS Word but it's not easy and doesn't always seem to work real well, which is ok if you don't mind files bloated with garbage characters.

You can still customize the bullets/symbols/indenting for outlining, define custom styles and the like.

Multiple column handling in WordPerfect is still easy-while still challenging in MS Word. Ditto for hanging indents & nonstandard line spacing.

In the past, templates in MS Word tended to look spiffier and were easier to set up and use than in WordPerfect. That said, I haven't tried the new WP template browser yet. The demo screenshots look pretty slick and that's on my list of things to learn.

Loading jpg photo files in WordPerfect occasionally continues to be problematic. In that case I import the jpg to MS Word, then copy & paste into WordPerfect. Conversely, if I need columns in Word, I set them up in WordPerfect then copy them over.

WordPerfect formatting continues to be intuitive and snappy. Inserting odd characters is easy-just press [cntl-w] and choose what you want from various sets. I haven't needed to use mathematical formulae in documents for a long time but have no reason to believe it suddenly has become difficult in X4. Ditto for creating large (>100 pages) documents/subdocuments, merging subdocuments, creating tables of contents, indexes, anchors & links. Headers & footers continue to be easy to set up. Inserting Watermarks into WP wasn't quite as easy as inserting them after conversion to Acrobat Pro, but acceptable for draft documents.

WP X4 works fine with Dragon Dictate 10.

I bought the Standard X4 upgrade. I have a prior Corel "Pro" version but heard that Paradox hasn't been updated and that the older Paradox works fine with the X4 suite, but I haven't tried that yet since WP by itself handles lists well and that's about all I need day-to-day. I do use the QuattroPro spreadsheet but not for anything fancy. I tend to stick with PowerPoint for slide creation mainly because if I need help, others use it so much I can just ask someone how to do something. And there's lots of academic material and medical slide freebies already in that format.

In a nutshell, I continue to use WordPerfect to get real work done, in a fast & clean manner with small filesizes. Although I have MS Office 2003 (required at my prior workplace) I see no compelling reason to upgrade to 2007 even though my new workplace uses only that; since WP X4 converts WP files to Adobe Acrobat and can import/export MS 2001/ 2003/ 2007 files farily well.

Folks will still likely complain about Corel's price, but it remains a bargin compared to MS Word. When it comes to getting the work done, WordPerfect is still the king of word processors.
